Achillion Palace

General
Achillion is situated at 9 km [ 5.6 miles ] east from Corfu Town on an evergreen hill. The Palace is surrounded by beautiful gardens.

History
This mansion was built between 1889 and 1892. It was designed by the Italian Architect Raffaelle Carito. The Palace was made in order to host and offer tranquility to the Queen Elisabeth of Hungary also Empress of  Austria, known by the name Sissy. During the 1st and 2nd world wars the Palace suffered of serious damages. After its refurbishment the Palace became and still is a museum.

Exhibits
Sissy dedicated her Palace to Achilles , the Trojan hero who was a symbol to her. She ordered two big statues to decorate the garden: the first one represents the hero in armor gazing the east and the second one [11.5m high] represents Achilles fatally wounded in the heel by Paris’ arrow.  The Palace is full of frescos which describe ancient Greek myths and many Greek statues, copies of course of the real ones. The Palace is a triplex neoclassic building surrounded by wonderful gardens. Famous to the British public as the birthplace of Prince Phillip, Achillion Palace is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Corfu.
